How the options differ
| Question | Super Visa | Visitor visa |
|---|---|---|
| Intended applicant | Eligible parents/grandparents | Eligible temporary visitors |
| Stay per entry | Up to five years, subject to decisions | Typically up to six months unless otherwise authorized |
| Insurance | Specific IRCC medical insurance requirement | Not the same Super Visa policy mandate, but private insurance often advisable |
| Host income | Minimum necessary income applies | Different visitor eligibility assessment |
Insurance decisions should fit the visa
Do not buy a short visitor medical policy and assume it automatically qualifies for Super Visa documentation. Review the one-year requirement, $100,000 limit and insurer eligibility.
Visa validity versus authorized stay
The number of years a visa is valid does not necessarily equal permission to remain for that duration on each visit. Always follow the CBSA/IRCC conditions issued for the traveller.
