What the Super Visa requires in 2026
A Super Visa is intended for eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents or registered Indians. Applicants must meet immigration requirements and provide proof of an eligible private insurance policy when they apply and on entry. A Super Visa is not permanent residence.
The insurance must provide at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, be valid for at least one year from the intended entry date, and cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation. See the official IRCC policy checklist.
How to compare actual policies
- Start with the parent’s age, arrival date and intended duration.
- Select coverage and deductible options; a higher deductible may lower premium but increases out-of-pocket exposure.
- Review pre-existing-condition stability and exclusions before you compare final prices.
- Check the insurer’s payment schedule, service contacts, refunds, waiting periods and claims process.
- Buy the issued policy and retain the confirmation—not just a quotation screenshot.
Should I choose $100,000 or more?
IRCC sets $100,000 as the minimum, not necessarily the right limit for every family. Coverage options of $150,000, $200,000 and higher may be available for added protection. A severe medical emergency can exceed a lower limit; higher coverage can also mean a higher premium. Evaluate risk, age, cost and policy exclusions together.
When your parent has a medical condition
Many insurers separate stable pre-existing conditions from unstable or excluded ones. Changes to medication, investigations and symptoms can affect stability. The exact definition varies; review your health questionnaire honestly and seek help before purchasing.
